Babe Slamenko is a true viking! Watch her pillage the Pistolitas with her Berzerkher clan this Saturday at the Kingsway Hangar!
1) What attracted you to the sport of roller derby?
When I first started watching the Eville girls play I knew it was something I had to do. There was a sport where I could turn left AND smash into people, without the stigma of being a NASCAR driver?!?!??! Sign me up!! I had no idea how to skate and had never played a full contact sport, but I was determined to learn. It was and still is a huge challenge for me but I love smashing into people while on wheels!
2) How did you come up with your derby name?
I'm a huge Oilers fan, and one of my favorite players growing up was Dave Semenko. He was the toughest player around and a total bruiser. I loved watching him play. He wasn't a superstar player, but he protected his teammates and had a surprising number of assists, making him a huge asset to his team. The challenge with his name was making it feminine, and derby appropriate. Not to mention, being called "Babe" all the time is just good for the ego. I will, however, also answer to "Slamenthead".
3) How would you describe yourself in three words?
Determined, a fighter, and a misfit.
4) Who is your nemesis on the track?
Anyone who yells, "GOT ONE!!!" in my general vicinity on the track. Grrrrrrr!!!
5) Do you have any pre-game rituals?
I typically stay low key and keep to myself; I try to stay relaxed and not think about the game or my opponents. Game day "go get 'em!" texts with my derby wife are also pretty typical, cuz she's awesome that way :)
6) If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would play you in the lead role?
Lori Petty.....star of "Tank Girl". But she would need a few more tattoos and piercings.
7) If you could have any super power, what would it be?
I'd like to have super strength. Being invisible or telepathic isn't any fun unless you can kick someone's a$$ and catch a crashing 747 while doing it.
8) What is your spirit animal?
Is a dragon too cheesy? Meh, I'll go with that.
